Krispy Kreme was founded here in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, back in 1937 by a man named Vernon Rudolph. Krispy Kreme celebrated its 80th anniversary by offering their box of one dozen doughnuts for just 80 cents on July 14, 2017. “It’s remarkable that for 80 years, Krispy Kreme’s commitment to delivering world-class doughnuts the Krispy Kreme way — hot, fresh, and now — has not changed,” said Jackie Woodward, Chief Marketing Officer of Krispy Kreme, in a press release. Today, residents of Winston-Salem love to see Krispy Kreme’s neon “Hot Now” sign lit up.
History of Krispy Kreme in Winston-Salem
Vernon Rudolph began selling doughnuts to local grocery stores in Winston-Salem in 1937. His secret doughnut recipe came from a French chef in New Orleans. No one else was selling doughnuts as sweet, light, and fluffy as Rudolph’s. The taste and smell of Rudolph’s doughnuts was so good that customers started coming to his bakery, requesting to buy doughnuts right out of the oven. At the time, he was only selling his doughnuts to grocery stores. Being the innovative man he was, Rudolph cut a hole in an outside wall and began selling his doughnuts to customers directly.
